Wellness Wisdom: 5 Minutes with Ana Ramirez

Wellness Wisdom: 5 Minutes with Ana Ramirez

In this edition of Wellness Wisdom, Spa Life International speaks with wellness architect Ana Ramirez about the next evolution of spa and wellness environments. Drawing on neuroscience, spatial design, and ancient wisdom, Ana explains how future spaces are moving beyond sensory engagement to support nervous system regulation, subconscious safety, and long term wellbeing.

SPA LIFE: What trends do you see emerging in the spa industry over the next two to three years?

ANA: As a wellness architect working in luxury hospitality, I see the industry evolving beyond multisensory experiences toward primal aware environments—spaces designed to regulate the nervous system at an instinctive level.

We are beginning to understand that the body responds to space before the mind does. This insight is shaping a new generation of wellness design that prioritises how environments signal safety, calm, and coherence subconsciously.

The body responds to space before the mind does

Key trends I see emerging include:

  • Therapeutic soundscapes and acoustic design that support brainwave regulation and emotional balance
  • Auditory immersion spaces such as sound healing rooms and vibrational therapies
  • Biophilic and geometric design aligned with natural patterns the body intuitively recognises
  • Personalised sensory journeys integrating scent, texture, light, and sound to support nervous system regulation

The next frontier is not only engaging the senses, but designing environments the body can immediately trust.

SPA LIFE: In your opinion, what does the future of the spa industry look like?

ANAIThe future lies in moving from sensory engagement to nervous system regulation through space. The most impactful wellness environments allow the body to return to balance almost instantly—before any treatment begins.

The future of spa design lies in creating environments the body can immediately trust.

This shift requires a deeper integration of neuroscience, spatial design, and ancient wisdom.

We will see more spaces intentionally designed to support parasympathetic activation, enhance interoception, and integrate practices such as sound healing, natural materials, and harmonic proportions. Ultimately, the space itself becomes part of the therapy.

SPA LIFE: What challenges do you see ahead for the industry?

ANAOne of the biggest challenges is that many spaces are still designed for visual impact rather than physiological response.

A space can feel beautiful, yet still be overstimulating—through lighting, acoustics, materials, or invisible stressors. Bridging this gap requires a deeper understanding of how the body processes environments subconsciously.

A space can look beautiful and still be physiologically overstimulating.”

Education is also critical. Designers and operators need a stronger understanding of how sensory inputs influence nervous system regulation, cognitive function, and emotional wellbeing, while still maintaining accessibility, authenticity, and operational feasibility.

SPA LIFE: What are your favourite personal wellness routines?

ANA: My routines have evolved over the past year as I transitioned into building my own brand and design studios. I now approach wellness with more fluidity, while staying anchored in daily practices that help me recalibrate.

My non negotiables include a blessings meditation, grounding in the garden, and receiving natural sunlight early in the day. I also enjoy my BrainTea blend, which supports focus and cognitive clarity.

Simple rituals such as walking with our dog, toning and chanting, and evening aromatherapy with herbal teas help me maintain internal coherence and calm.

SPA LIFE: What advice would you offer the next generation of wellness professionals?

ANA: Focus on designing experiences that go beyond trends, rooted in authenticity, science, and a deep understanding of the human body.

Wellness is not only about what we add into a space, but also what we remove—noise, stress, and disconnection. Design with intention. The goal is not simply to create beautiful environments, but to support how people feel, regulate, and function within them.

Ana's Quick Tips for Spa Leaders

•    Design spaces for nervous system regulation, not visual impact alone
•    Use sound and acoustics intentionally to support balance and calm
•    Create multisensory harmony rather than isolated sensory features
•    Integrate natural materials, geometry, and ancient principles with modern science
•    Prioritise subconscious safety as a foundation for wellbeing

In the future, the space itself becomes part of the therapy.”

THE BOTTOM LINE:
The future of spa design lies in environments that regulate the nervous system instinctively. By combining neuroscience, sound, and sensory intelligence, spas can support emotional resilience, mental clarity, and long term wellbeing—well beyond the treatment room.
