Derby University to cancel Spa Management degree

Derby University to cancel Spa Management degree

The University of Derby has announced that, from 2022, it will no longer be offering its Spa Management degree.

The course – a BSc (Hons) degree in International Spa Management – was the first of its kind in the UK when it launched in September 2002. The following year, Derby added a university diploma in International Spa Management.

In an official statement, the university said the decision to drop its spa management degree courses “reflects a shift within [this] sector to more industry-led qualifications, which has led to a steady decline in student numbers over recent years.”

The UKSPA released a statement saying: “This is a sign that the spa and wellness industry is undervalued and misunderstood.”

The spa management courses will close in three years’ time, once all current students have graduated.

Professor Malcolm Todd, Deputy Vice-Chancellor/Provost (Academic and Student Experience) at the University, says: “The University of Derby is proud to be an integral part of Buxton and is a key partner in supporting the town’s long-term growth and ambition. The changes not only help to achieve that, but also enable the University to deliver against its broader civic commitments across the county and the opportunities for the regional economy offered up by the Industrial Strategy.”
