The Aufguss World Championship is more than just a competition; in the words of Aufguss WM, the organising body, it is a platform that celebrates the deep connections and cultural diversity of the sauna community.
This year’s Championship will be hosted in the sauna theatre at Thermen Bussloo, in the Netherlands and this will see the best sauna masters from around the world gathering on a single stage to perform their ‘Show Aufguss’.
In a show Aufguss, the sauna becomes a performance theatre where the participants express their unique stories, bringing these to life through a combination of music, lighting, costume and choreography, all supplemented with exclusive aromatic infusions to stimulate the senses of the audience.
Britain’s interests are represented by Melissa Little, an experienced sauna master from Anada Spa and Wellness. In her performance, titled ‘Cailleach’, Melissa tells the story of the largest ever Witch hunt to sweep across Scotland in 1661 and against a backdrop of haunting music and dressed in an authentic costume, Melissa plays the role of a ‘Hooded Woman’ or a Witch. The audience is surrounded by aromas of heather and peat from the highlands and a soundtrack that emulates the raucous gang of hunters approaching the Witches dwelling and portrays the tension of the moments when there is a loud knock on the door which tends to make the audience jump, then before they giggle with nervous laughter.
Another Brit, Dan Lawson from The Nomadic Sauna, Brighton is also hoping to reach the finals via the Play-offs to be held at Infinet Sen, Czech Republic on 21st-23th August. Dan will be performing his story of ‘The Journey of Boris’, a tale of a well-known man who ‘grows’ from a world of power and ego to being at one with nature.
Wellness professionals from around the globe will visit Thermen Bussloo between September 9th – 15th to attend the Aufguss World Championship, hoping to both learn from the expertise of the performers and experience unique shows designed to stimulate the senses and celebrate the art of Aufguss.
