The Spa Academy at Daniel Thwaites Spa Group Nurtures Talent

The Spa Academy by Daniel Thwaites Spa Group was launched in September 2022 to both address recruitment challenges and enhance professional development within the spa and hospitality industry. This unique training initiative, aimed at combatting the recruitment crisis and low staff retention rates that a common in the spa and leisure industries, has garnered attention for its innovative approach to nurturing talent.

Eighteen months after the initial launch, Stephanie Atkinsons, Talent and Development Advisor for Daniel Thwaites Spa Group, provides insights into the progress and impact of The Spa Academy:

  1. Participation and Current Enrolment: The initiative commenced with cautious optimism, welcoming trainees across three qualifications. In 2024 The Academy remains steadfast in its commitment to cultivating a skilled workforce and has a number of recruits about to finish their Academy training. The qualifications not only bring attention from external recruits but has proven a huge retention tool for motivating existing team members, gifting them with a career path they may not have thought of previously.
  1. Post-Apprenticeship Employment: The majority of trainees who have completed their apprenticeships are poised to continue their journey within the Daniel Thwaites Spa Group.
  1. Continuous Improvement: Acknowledging the importance of feedback and industry developments, the Spa Group remains responsive, currently reviewing the leisure team member apprenticeship to tailor it more closely to the organisation's needs.
  1. Success Stories: The Spa Academy has witnessed notable achievements, with trainees thriving in their roles. Their personal feedback underscores the positive impact of the program on individual growth and confidence.
  1. Addressing Recruitment Challenges: The initiative has played a pivotal role in broadening recruitment avenues and bolstering retention efforts, particularly in roles historically marked by high turnover rates.
  1. Support Mechanisms: Trainees benefit from a robust support system, including mentorship from line managers, assistance from the central People Team, and access to company wellbeing benefits and additional pastoral services.
  1. Future Expansion: Plans are underway to expand the Spa Academy program, with a focus on increasing engagement across properties and attracting external apprentices. The Group remains committed to evolving the initiative to meet evolving industry demands.
  1. Cultural Impact: The Spa Academy has not only demonstrated the organisation's dedication to employee development but has also reshaped perceptions about training opportunities within the company, fostering a culture of growth and inclusivity.
