Residents of Suffolk are being invited to take part in a 5K fundraising walk in spa robes this October, with Riverhills Health Club & Spa partnering with Cancer Support Suffolk to launch the county’s first Robe-a-thon.
Taking place on Monday 12th October, the event will coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Participants will make a £10 donation to join the walk and will also be encouraged to seek additional sponsorship. The Robe-a-thon will begin at 11am, with participants gathering from 10.30am on the lawn outside Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich. The route will pass Cancer Support Suffolk’s centre on St Margaret’s Street before continuing to Riverhills Health Club in Bramford.
Funds raised through the event will go towards Cancer Support Suffolk, an independent local charity providing support to people living with cancer across the county.
The idea for the event came from Riverhills managing director Dave Courteen, who is also an ambassador for Cancer Support Suffolk. The Robe-a-thon forms part of a wider programme of fundraising activities planned by the health club in support of the charity.
Speaking about the event, Courteen said the team had been looking for ways to create fundraising activities that would encourage local people to get involved, with the Robe-a-thon intended to offer a more unusual approach to supporting the charity.
On completion of the walk, participants will receive a medal and be offered a hot drink at Riverhills. Lunch will also be available to purchase for those who wish to stay at the club following the event.
Cancer Support Suffolk CEO Mark Murphy MBE said the partnership would help the charity continue providing its range of free services to people affected by cancer.
The charity provides support before, during and after a cancer diagnosis, including dedicated support groups in East and West Suffolk. It also funds therapy and counselling at its Ipswich wellbeing hub and at Ipswich and West Suffolk hospitals.
Its wider team includes complementary therapists, counsellors, educators and ambassadors, alongside volunteers and local businesses supporting its work.
Cancer Support Suffolk’s wellbeing hub at 56–58 St Margaret’s Street, Ipswich, is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm. The charity can also be contacted by phone or email for further information and support.
